Since 2007, Kutak Rock been lead outside legal counsel to the District of Columbia on the acquisition and disposition of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This project is one of the largest developable tracts of land in the District. When redeveloped, the full site will include mixed use residential, retail and commercial facilities, foreign embassies, affordable housing, schools and a research hospital.
Kutak Rock led the negotiations and the acquisition of the property from the United States Army and worked on the negotiations and disposition of the site to a private development team led by Hines, Urban Atlantic and Triden.

The project has won multiple national awards, including being named "Deal of the Year" by African American Real Estate Professionals (AAREP DC). AAREP DC is the premier trade organization for African Americans in the D.C. area commercial real estate industry. Its members serve as advocates for diverse representation in commercial real estate, and its student outreach program builds a foundation for the next generation of African-American executives in the industry. The project also won the Outstanding Small Area Plan Award from the National Capital Area Chapter of the American Planning Association in 2012.
