Kutak Rock Welcomes Sports Law Attorney John Long in Irvine Office

Kutak Rock is pleased to announce that attorney John G. Long has joined the firm’s Irvine office. John brings more than a decade of experience representing universities, coaches and sports organizations in high-profile collegiate and professional sports matters. John joins Kutak Rock to help universities and other stakeholders stabilize the college sports industry amid financial burdens, enforcement changes and other regulatory challenges resulting from legal developments, including the House v. NCAA settlement. 

John’s practice historically focuses on NCAA infractions and compliance, Title IX gender equity, sports wagering, and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) issues. He has served as lead counsel for numerous Division I institutions in NCAA major infractions matters and has advised conferences and universities on complex compliance and eligibility issues.  Additionally, John advises universities on issues involving student-athlete revenue share and institutional strategies for business operations and legal compliance post-House

Prior to joining Kutak Rock, John was a member of the Collegiate Sports Practice Group at Bond, Schoeneck & King, where he represented Division I institutions and conferences on a range of high-profile matters involving collegiate athletics. He previously practiced at a large labor and employment law firm where he obtained the largest appellate victories in NCAA infractions appeals history on behalf of Georgia Tech. Earlier in his career, John served as the institutional executive for athletics compliance at Southeastern Louisiana University.

John earned his J.D. from Marquette University Law School, where he also obtained a Certificate in Sports Law from the National Sports Law Institute. He received his B.S. in political communication studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He is licensed to practice law in Texas.
