Kutak Rock Partner Peter Barrett to Present on Professional Ethics and Limits on Zealous Advocacy at 27th Annual Bankruptcy Law Conference
News | May 28, 2026Kutak Rock partner Peter Barrett will serve as a panelist at the upcoming 27th Annual Bankruptcy Law Conference where he will join bankruptcy law leaders to present “Professional Ethics and Limits on Zealous Advocacy.” The program will take place on Friday, June 5 at The Tides Inn in Irvington and will explore the evolution of zealous advocacy and the ethical responsibilities that shape modern legal practice, particularly within bankruptcy law.
The panel will examine the historical roots of the doctrine of zealous advocacy, tracing its origins through legal ethics developments in the United States and the evolution of professional responsibility standards. Panelists will discuss how lawyers balance vigorous client advocacy with duties of candor, diligence, fairness and professional integrity.
The presentation will also address practical ethical considerations bankruptcy practitioners encounter, including meritorious claims and contentions, candor toward tribunals, fairness toward opposing parties and third persons, disciplinary obligations, and sanctions considerations under bankruptcy rules and federal law.
Peter represents unsecured and secured creditors, trustees, lessors, equity holders and corporate debtors in insolvency matters, including Chapter 11 reorganizations, business liquidations and loan workouts. He also represents clients in connection with acquisition of distressed assets and insolvency-related litigation. Based in the Richmond, Virginia office of Kutak Rock, Peter regularly appears in bankruptcy courts across the country to represent the interests of firm clients. He also serves as a member of the panel of Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustees for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division.
