John Schembari, Sevawn Foster Holt Author Article for Benefits Magazine

News | July 13, 2020

John Schembari and Sevawn Foster Holt co-authored the article, “Benefit Basics: Supplemental Unemployment Benefit Plans,” in the July 2020 issue of Benefits Magazine

The article states that supplemental unemployment benefit (SUB) plans are receiving renewed attention during the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Further, the article explains that employers and unions may want to consider whether these plans are an appropriate option for providing laid-off or furloughed workers with adequate resources during the COVID-19 global pandemic while lessening the financial strain on employers that is associated with traditional severance programs.

The authors also cover how SUB plans work, the statutory requirements to establish a SUB plan, and the advantages and disadvantages of a SUB plan.

Mr. Schembari concentrates his practice primarily in employee benefits law and serves as chair of Kutak Rock's employee benefits and executive compensation group. He works with private, public and governmental employers on their employee benefit plans and compensation programs.

Ms. Holt focuses her practice on employee benefits, executive compensation, and corporate and partnership taxation.

Benefits Magazine covers benefit issues affecting multiemployer, single employer and public employee plan representatives regarding healthcare, retirement, financial literacy and other issues. The magazine includes case studies and profiles of people who are shaping the industry.
