Michael Low Chairs, Moderates Panel at 2019 Western Region Captive Insurance Conference

As Chair of the 2019 Western Region Captive Insurance Conference (WRCIC) in Scottsdale, Arizona, Kutak Rock partner Michael Low provided a welcome address to 157 attendees from 24 states and the United Kingdom on May 20, introduced keynote speaker Tom Jones and moderated a tax panel. The conference included sessions on captive taxation, captive investments, captive utilization, emerging issues, analytics, structures and domicile regulation.

Mr. Low moderated the panel, “Latest on Federal & State Taxes, Including Syzygy Decision: The Past, Present and Future of Qualifying as an Insurance Company,” that included keynote speaker and recognized captive tax expert Tom Jones from McDermott Will & Emery, LLP; Charles Levelle, a lawyer in the Louisville, Kentucky office of Binham Greenebaum Doll, LLP; and Alan Fine, a partner in the Brown Smith Wallace Insurance Advisory Services group. The session discussed the latest tax developments in captive insurance, focusing on state tax developments and the recent Syzygy case in the United States Tax Court. The panelists discussed how these 2019 developments will influence long term trends.
