Marcellus A. Chase


Marcellus is a registered patent attorney and has prepared and prosecuted original patent filings in the United States and internationally (via PCT and foreign patent offices). His past work has included medical device, aerospace, telecommunication and green energy technologies. He has assisted with several complex Intellectual Property litigation matters in state and district courts in Missouri, Kansas and the International Trade Commission. Marcellus is well versed in the intricacies and nuances of university technology transfer practice as he worked in-house at a major research university for over two and a half years prior to entering private practice with a well-known international law firm. He represented the university technology transfer office at various meetings and on various committees for the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), Licensing Executive Society (LES), Missouri Biotechnology Association (MOBIO) and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Marcellus has negotiated research and development contracts, confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements, licensing deals and other collaboration agreements, by and between universities, government agencies and private industry, sometimes involving complex international co-ownership issues. 

As a co-inventor of U.S. Patent No. 7,938,384, Marcellus understands the patent process from the perspective of the inventor. As the owner of his small start-up business prior to joining Kutak Rock, he has experienced and overcome some of the challenges encountered by small businesses and start-up companies.
