Chief Financial Officer

The primary responsibilities of the CFO are to direct the firm’s financial functions and maximize financial performance according to the firm’s overall business and strategic objectives. The CFO will work closely with the Office of the Chair and other operational leaders and interface regularly with the Executive Committee and other management committees.

The CFO is the lead professional within the Firm’s Accounting & Finance Department, providing counsel, leadership, training, support, feedback, and encouragement to department personnel. Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide executive leadership and direction to the firm’s financial operations, including accounting, expense control, financial planning and analysis, banking relationships, payroll, audit, tax, cash management, accounts payable, billings, client trust accounts, accounts receivable and collections.
  • Work closely with firm leadership to develop and manage budgets and provide counsel and advice regarding financial issues impacting the budgets.
  • Work with the Office of the Chair and other firm leadership to prepare financial presentations and reports to attorneys and committees and participate in the development of operating plans and procedures.
  • Support the development of and ensure that all established accounting and financial policies, regulations, processes, and agreements are complied with and appropriately documented.
  • Provide sound and strong financial advice to support firm stability, liquidity, and growth.
  • Implement appropriate financial reporting tools and metrics, develop and maintain financial analysis and support services, and recommend organizational and operational improvements based on data analysis.
  • Identify and implement cost control initiatives and ensure appropriate accounting controls are in place.
  • Monitor and manage the accounting for office leases and subleases, review and analyze financial impact of new or renewal leases or subleases, and analyze the impact of significant leasehold improvements.
  • Monitor and manage the accounting for the Firm’s ownership of its Omaha office property and review and analyze financial impact of capital improvements.
  • Provide financial analysis in support of lateral attorney hires and assist with integration and transition of financial operations and data.
  • Oversee maintenance of books and records in accordance with the basis of accounting used for partnership income tax purposes. Monitor current trends and best practices in accounting and financial reporting, including an understanding of GAAP and other regulatory agency rules and guidelines. Communicate the impact of new developments and regulations and make appropriate recommendations for action.
  • Work with the firm’s internal counsel and firm leadership on professional liability, employment and client security matters and assist with the firm’s professional liability and cyber risk liability insurance renewal. Responsible for the renewal of the firm’s general liability, workers’ compensation, property, fiduciary, business interruption and other lines of insurance as needed, obtain certificates of insurance and file claims.
  • Oversee firm wide payroll services, 401(k) profit sharing contributions and proper taxation of various fringe benefits.
  • Oversee partner monthly distributions, quarterly tax distributions and year-end distributions, capital contributions, profit sharing contributions, nonresident composite state tax estimates and year-end tax information, including K-1s and state tax affidavits.
  • Oversee the firm’s independent review, auditing and tax services and provide annual financial report to the partners.
  • Manage client and accounting and financial reporting systems and processes.
  • Manage Audit Letter procedures and processes and provide support to the Audit Letter Committee.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop finance and accounting staff and direct training and development to ensure that all financial resources are in alignment with organization needs.
  • Participate in building a culture that is team-oriented, committed to professional excellence, and ensures a high level of customer service.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Master’s degree in Business, with an accounting and finance emphasis is a plus
  • Certified Public Accountant designation a strong plus


  • Ideal candidate has a CPA or MBA with at least 10+ years of accounting/finance experience and 5+ years of related leadership experience as a CFO or similar role
  • Experience with accounting systems and automated computer applications (such as Aderant)
  • Experience as a financial leader in a law firm or professional services firm is a plus
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite of software
