Kutak Rock, a national leader in public finance, seeks associate and lateral of counsel or partner attorneys to join the tax group of the Firm’s national public finance practice. The ideal candidate will complement our ability to devise innovative strategies for the dynamic environment of tax-exempt financing, particularly for complex issues, as well as provide routine legal advice in a client-focused, cost-effective manner.
The position may be located at any of the Firm’s offices. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of experience in municipal finance or tax law generally, but the Firm is also accepting applications from recent law school and LL.M. in taxation graduates with a strong interest in public finance tax law (sometimes referred to as “103 tax” law after Section 103 of the Internal Revenue Code relating to tax-exempt bonds). An advanced degree in tax law is not a requirement, but candidates must demonstrate an interest in tax law and a willingness to learn tax issues relating to public finance. The candidate must be proactive and will be expected to work with lawyers located in multiple Kutak Rock offices and clients throughout the country.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities will include : conducting tax-related due diligence to support the tax exemption or other tax advantage of municipal bonds; drafting tax-related closing certifications and agreements; advising attorneys and clients regarding tax favored structuring of municipal debt financings; assisting attorneys and clients with arbitrage rebate compliance; representing clients in examinations of bond issues by the Internal Revenue Service; providing advice concerning tax accounting of bond payments such as matters relating to bond discount and bond premium; assisting with tax-related matters concerning interest rate swap transactions; researching changes in tax law and preparing white papers or other informational documents for internal and external distribution. Candidates should have a strong academic background and possess excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills.
Salary Range: $110,000 - $550,000, commensurate with experience/office location.
